Jatrabari Businessman Kidnapped at Gunpoint in Jashore
A businessman from the Jatrabari area of the capital was allegedly abducted at gunpoint in Jashore. The victim, identified as Md. Iqbal Hossain Mazumder, 46, a permanent resident of Jatrabari, was forcibly picked up by a gang of 9–10 armed individuals in a microbus from the TB Clinic area of Jashore on the afternoon of January 3. According to family sources, the kidnappers kept him blindfolded in several secret locations and brutally tortured him. During the captivity, the abductors forced him to contact his family and demanded a ransom of 10 million BDT for his release, causing severe panic among his relatives. The victim's wife, Nilufa Yasmin, stated that she managed to collect 2 million BDT by borrowing from relatives and using their savings to save her husband's life. The money was delivered through a process led by the victim's friend, Abed. However, even after receiving the partial ransom, the kidnappers did not release him immediately and demanded the remaining 8 million BDT within seven days. Eventually, after forcing the victim to sign a written undertaking for the remaining 8 million BDT, the kidnappers abandoned an unconscious Iqbal in the Concord Land residential area of Jatrabari at around 2:00 AM on January 13. Pedestrians rescued him and took him to Dhaka Medical College Hospital for primary care, and he was later shifted to a private general hospital in Jatrabari, where he is currently undergoing treatment. The family further alleged that the criminals are continuing to issue threats of abduction and death over the phone. Regarding the incident, Md. Iqbal Hossain Mazumder stated that he intends to file a case with the Jatrabari Police Station once he recovers.
