Dua Lipa sues Samsung over alleged unauthorised use of image
Dua Lipa has filed a $15 million lawsuit against Samsung, accusing the tech giant of using her image on television packaging without permission.
According to legal documents filed on Friday (May 8) in the Central District of California, the Grammy-winning singer alleged that Samsung used a copyrighted backstage photograph of her to market and sell several television models.
The lawsuit claims the image, taken during the 2024 Austin City Limits Music Festival, began appearing on Samsung TV packaging in 2025 without her approval or compensation.
In the complaint, the singer accused the company of copyright infringement, trademark infringement, and violating her publicity rights through what she described as the “unauthorised commercial exploitation” of her likeness.
The lawsuit further alleged that Samsung knowingly used the image because of Lipa’s global popularity and public appeal, placing the photo prominently on cardboard television boxes displayed in retail stores.
Lipa also claimed the company ignored repeated requests to stop using the image, describing Samsung’s response as “dismissive and callous.”
According to the filing, the use of the singer’s image created the impression that she had officially endorsed Samsung televisions, despite no partnership or promotional agreement existing between the two parties.
The complaint referenced social media comments from consumers who reportedly said they purchased, or considered purchasing, the televisions after noticing the singer’s photograph on the packaging.
One comment cited in the lawsuit reportedly read, “I wasn’t even planning on buying a TV but I saw the box so I decided to get it,” while another user allegedly wrote that they would buy the television “just because Dua is on it.”
The lawsuit stated that the singer had no involvement in the campaign and was never consulted about the use of her image.
“Ms. Lipa’s face was prominently used for a mass marketing campaign for a consumer product without her knowledge, consent, or control,” the complaint stated.
At the time of publication, Samsung had not publicly responded to the allegations.
