‘Roles are different’: Miraz addresses Mosaddek question before Australia opener
Mehidy Hasan Miraz has led his Tigers to three consecutive ODI series victories, but questions over his captaincy continue to linger. On the eve of the ODI series against Australia, which begins on Tuesday, the Bangladesh skipper once again faced questions regarding team selection, particularly about the prospects of Mosaddek Hossain, given the similarities in their all-round roles.
Miraz had previously drawn criticism for his handling of leg-spinner Rishad Hossain in the ODI format, with the youngster often not completing his allotted quota of overs.
Addressing questions about Mosaddek, Miraz downplayed any perceived overlap between their responsibilities.
“In regards to the issue of Mosaddek, we have played together in the Bangladesh team for a long time, even in the 2019 ODI World Cup. It’s not a different issue. He will play his role and I will play mine. Mosaddek is a batting all-rounder while I am a bowling all-rounder. So our roles are different,” Miraz told reporters at the pre-match press conference on Monday.
The Bangladesh captain also stressed the importance of Mosaddek’s contribution if he gets the opportunity to feature in the series.
“If he can perform, it will be a big help for the team. At the end of the day, we are all thinking about where we can take the team, and I feel confident regarding Mosaddek since he has been performing in domestic cricket. If his opportunity comes, he will do well,” Miraz said, though he stopped short of confirming whether Mosaddek would be included in the XI for the opening ODI.
Australia are touring Bangladesh for an ODI series for the first time in 15 years, and Miraz acknowledged the significance of the challenge ahead while expressing optimism about his side’s chances.
“We are definitely excited to be playing a series against Australia after a long time and even as a captain I am excited. I think that we are beginning a very good challenge and if we can start well, it will be good for us,” he said, highlighting the importance of gaining early momentum in the series.
