Farmers are main driving force of food security: MoWR State Minister
State Minister for Water Resources Farhad Hossain Azad said farmers are the main driving force behind the food security of the country.
He was speaking as the chief guest at a function held at Boda Pilot Government Model School and College ground on Sunday morning (July 19). Upazila administration organized the function to distribute agri-loan waiver certificates and saplings.
As part of implementing the current government’s election manifesto, capital and interest of agricultural loans up to Tk 10,000 were waived for 5,890 marginal farmers in Boda upazila. State Minister distributed ‘Agri-loan Waiver Certificate’ and 29,450 saplings of various species among the beneficiary farmers.
Panchagarh District Deputy Commissioner (DC) Mosa. Shukria Parvin presided over the meeting. District Superintendent of Police (SP) Abu Saim was present as the special guest. Upazila Nirbahi Officer (UNO) Rabiul Islam and Agriculture Officer Rashedunnabi also attended the program, among others.
‘In the first cabinet meeting, a decision was taken to waive loans up to Tk 10,000, including interest, for 13 lakh farmers across the country. The farmers of Boda are getting the benefits today. The main goal of the government is that no farmer should fall behind in production due to minor debts,’ he added. He also urged every farmer to plant five saplings to protect the environment.
State Minister Azad stated that necessary measures have already been taken in Panchagarh to prevent any crisis in agricultural management, including fertilizers and seeds, so that farmers can continue their production smoothly.
He further mentioned that holding the principle 'if the farmer survives, the country survives', the Tarique Rahman government has already brought back the canal digging program of Ziaur Rahman. This initiative aims to conserve irrigation, protect biodiversity, and create sanctuaries through fish farming.
Besides, to improve healthcare services in the district, the Modern Sadar Hospital is being upgraded to 250 beds and the upazila hospitals to 101 beds. Netherlands and Malaysia have discussed initiatives to build hospitals in this district using their advanced technology, he added.
The State Minister expressed his desire to declare Panchagarh district as one of the model districts of the country very soon. He sought the cooperation of the administration, politicians, professionals, and people from all walks of life.
DC Mosa. Shukria Parvin said nearly 6,000 farmers of Boda upazila will be able to start farming with new enthusiasm due to this breakthrough step of the government. This will make the rural economy more dynamic. At the end of the program, the chief guest and other guests formally distributed the loan waiver certificates.
