PM Tarique slams ‘chanachur’ jibe, defends budget as people-focused
Prime Minister Tarique Rahman has criticised opposition parties for comparing the 2026-27 fiscal year’s budget to “chanachur”, saying the remarks were unfair to a people-focused financial plan.
Speaking at a Family Card distribution programme at Victoria High School ground in Sreemangal today, he said the budget had been designed for public welfare.
“In the budget we have made all arrangements for the people… those who call it anti-people -- can they ever be friends of the people?” he said. “They can never be friends of the people.”
Family Cards were distributed among 155 families in ward 1 of Mirzapur union under Sreemangal upazila.
Referring to allocations for Family Cards, Farmer Cards, and the education and health sectors, the PM defended the budget placed in parliament on June 11.
“Some people have said they do not accept the budget. Did you not see it in the newspapers?” he said. “Some have said this budget is like chanachur.”
His comments referred to remarks by National Citizen Party (NCP) Convener Nahid Islam, who described the budget as “chanachur”, saying it “looks attractive but has no nutritional value”.
Jamaat-e-Islami also held protests in Dhaka, calling the budget “anti-people”.
The prime minister said that opposition to government programmes could disrupt welfare initiatives.
“If these people get a chance to create unrest in the country, we will not be able to implement the Family Card programme,” he said.
He said the government had begun delivering on election pledges, including support for tea garden workers in Sylhet.
“We have been able to keep our word today,” he said, adding that Family Cards would be expanded within the next year to cover almost all women tea workers.
He also announced financial assistance for tea garden workers, including Tk 2 lakh each for 50 women to build houses.
The prime minister said the government would introduce scholarships for children of tea workers and planned to roll out Farmer Cards for around 40 lakh farmers nationwide within a year.
“Our aim is to change the fate of Bangladesh and its people,” he said.
