Efforts are underway to resume direct maritime connectivity between Chittagong Port and Myanmar’s Yangon and Sittwe ports to boost cross-border trade between Bangladesh and Myanmar.
Speaking at an exchange-of-views meeting with leaders of the Chittagong Chamber of Commerce & Industry (CCCI) and local business figures at the World Trade Center conference hall in Chittagong on Wednesday afternoon (September 23, 2026), Myanmar Ambassador to Bangladesh Kyaw Soe Moe announced that both governments are actively working on this initiative. The ambassador noted that as neighboring nations, Bangladesh and Myanmar have substantial potential to expand bilateral trade. He highlighted that if discussed economic corridors, such as the Bangladesh-China-Myanmar linkages, are implemented following Prime Minister Tarique Rahman's recent state visits, regional connectivity and economic ties will deepen significantly. Furthermore, Ambassador Kyaw Soe Moe mentioned that Myanmar is developing an LNG hub with Russian assistance and embarking on hydroelectric power projects, presenting Bangladesh with opportunities to import power and LNG to address its ongoing energy demands.
Emphasizing the importance of business-to-business (B2B) and government-to-government (G2G) collaboration, the envoy pointed out trade potential in commodities such as rice, ginger, rubber, and fish from Myanmar, alongside Bangladeshi exports in pharmaceuticals, chemicals, and ready-made garments. Initiatives are also being taken to launch direct flights connecting Yangon with Dhaka and Chittagong. CCCI President Mohammad Amirul Haq stressed that coastal shipping routes, improved road links, and direct air travel are essential for turning Chittagong into a regional investment hub. Business leaders present also urged cooperation in resolving visa complexities, signing maritime protocols, and facilitating smooth banking and financial transactions between both countries.
