As the tenure of current United Nations Secretary-General António Guterres draws to a close, the race to choose his successor has intensified with eight prominent candidates actively competing for the prestigious global post.

The diverse pool of contenders features experienced diplomats and global leaders—including five women and three men. Among the prominent figures are Guyana's Carolyn Rodrigues-Birkett, Costa Rica's Recia Grynspan, Argentina's Rafael Mariano Grossi, Ecuador's María Fernanda Espinosa, and Chile's Michelle Bachelet.

The 15-member UN Security Council is currently evaluating the candidates through informal and secret ballot rounds to gauge popularity. However, final victory depends not only on general support but also on the consensus and veto power of the five permanent members—the US, UK, China, Russia, and France.
