An Awami League activist named Fakhrul Alam Ratan (50) was hacked to death by miscreants outside his home in broad daylight in Kaunia upazila of Rangpur. The incident took place on Monday afternoon (October 19, 2026) in Haricharan Lasker village under Balapara union of the upazila. The deceased Ratan was the son of the late Motiyar Rahman from the same village and the elder brother of local Awami League leader Noyon. He used to work for an NGO before leaving his job to manage his family's land and property.

According to relatives and police, after Ratan stepped out of his house on Monday afternoon, lurched miscreants surrounded him and indiscriminately hacked him with sharp weapons before fleeing the scene. When he was subsequently rushed to the upazila health complex, the on-duty doctor declared him dead. Kaunia Police Station Officer-in-Charge (OC) Badal Chandra Mondal stated that the murder is preliminarily believed to have stemmed from previous enmity and a struggle for local dominance. Police have recovered the body and sent it to the Rangpur Medical College (RpMC) hospital morgue for an autopsy, while drives are underway to arrest those involved.
