An elderly man named Md. Salam Sheikh (61) has been subjected to allegations of assault in Durgapur Union of Pirojpur Sadar Upazila. In connection with this incident, police have arrested former Durgapur Union Parishad Chairman Md. Noman Hossain Mridha in a filed case.

The injured Salam Sheikh is currently undergoing treatment at Pirojpur District Hospital. According to the statement (ejahar), the incident took place on the night of October 20 on a paved road on the western side of the Durgapur Union Parishad. A statement has been filed at Pirojpur Sadar Police Station naming seven individuals, including the former chairman, and listing an additional 10 to 12 unnamed persons as accused.

According to the statement, around 9:00 PM while on his way home, an argument broke out between Salam Sheikh and a few individuals. At one point, he was allegedly beaten up, causing injuries to his face and various parts of his body. Local people later rescued him and took him to Pirojpur District Hospital.

The statement further alleges that the attack was carried out against Salam Sheikh because he protested the verbal abuse of BNP activists and threats to vandalize and set fire to the BNP office. During the incident, he was punched and kicked, and beaten even after falling to the ground, according to the allegations. The statement also claims that he was subsequently threatened with death.

Regarding the matter, Durgapur Union Parishad chairman candidate Abhi Hasan Akash claimed that the attack occurred due to political rivalry. Expressing his solidarity with the hospitalized Salam Sheikh, he demanded a proper investigation into the incident and legal action against those involved. Durgapur Union BNP General Secretary Kamrul Salekin Topon has also demanded a fair investigation into the incident.

The statement includes the names of seven individuals, including Md. Noman Hossain Mridha, who is identified as the President of Durgapur Union Awami League. They have been accused of being involved in the attack.

Pirojpur Sadar Police Station Officer-in-Charge (OC) Md. Shariful Islam said that a case has been filed over the incident. The former chairman has been arrested and sent to court.
