Section 144 Imposed in Galua Bazar of Rajapur Amid Counter-Protests Over Union Split
Police personnel deployed at Galua Bazar in Rajapur upazila following the imposition of Section 144 by the administration to prevent counter-protests.

The upazila administration has imposed Section 144 in Galua Bazar and adjacent areas under Rajapur upazila of Jhalakathi due to concerns over public safety following the announcement of counter-human chain demonstrations over a proposal to split Galua Union into two separate unions.

The restriction was issued in an official order signed by Upazila Nirbahi Officer (UNO) and Executive Magistrate Rifat Ara Mouri on Friday afternoon. According to the order, the ban remains in effect from 2:00 PM on Friday until 12:00 PM on Saturday (October 24).

It was learned that two opposing factions had announced human chain demonstrations at Galua Bazar at 3:00 PM on Friday—one supporting and the other opposing the initiative to divide Galua Union into two administrative units. Fearing a breach of public peace and order, the local administration stepped in to enforce the emergency measure.

UNO Rifat Ara Mouri stated that entry into Galua Bazar and surrounding areas for the purpose of assembling or gathering has been strictly prohibited. Furthermore, the use of megaphones, loudspeakers, and sound amplifiers has been banned. Within the designated restricted zone and its surroundings, gatherings, rallies, processions, meetings of five or more people, and the carrying of sticks or weapons of any kind are completely prohibited.

The order clarified that the restrictions do not apply to law enforcement agencies and emergency service providers. The administration warned that strict legal action will be taken against anyone defying the directive.

With the order in place, all scheduled public programs, demonstrations, and mass gatherings will remain suspended in Galua Bazar and its vicinity during the specified period.
