Sharadiya Durga Puja Begins in Kalapara, Patuakhali with Maha Shashthi Rituals
Devotees gathering at a temple in Kalapara, Patuakhali, during the auspicious Maha Shashthi rituals ushering in Durga Puja.

The grandest religious festival of the Hindu community, Sharadiya Durga Puja, commenced with solemn religious fervor across Kalapara Upazila in Patuakhali District through Shasthyadikalparambha and Shashthi Bihit Puja rituals.

The festivities officially began on Friday morning (October 16, 2026) at 8:30 AM across 17 Puja mandaps in the upazila with auspicious prayers invocation to Goddess Durga. Temple premises resonated with the blowing of conch shells (shangkha), rhythmic beating of dhak drums, burning incense, ringings of brass bells, ululation, and recitations of sacred scriptures (Chandi Path).

Devotees gathered at the pavilions to pray for the destruction of dark and evil forces and the awakening of the divine feminine energy to restore truth, righteousness, and harmony. The main formal rites of the festival will kick off on Friday evening following the ceremonial Amantran (invitation) and Adhibas (consecration) of Goddess Durga. According to Sanatan tradition, Goddess Durga descends to earth to conquer evil, protect the righteous, and bestow blessings of peace and well-being upon humanity. Upazila administrative authorities and local police have coordinated comprehensive security measures across all 17 venues to ensure smooth celebrations throughout the five-day festival.
