The body of a housewife named Rina Bepari (39) has been recovered from the Kaliganga River in Nazirpur, Pirojpur, three days after she went missing following a trawler capsizing incident. On Wednesday (October 21) around 9:00 AM, police and the fire service recovered the floating body in the Madhurabad area of Sreeramkati Union in the upazila. Later, family members identified her.
Rina Bepari was the wife of Shankar Bepari from Bharatkathi village of Guarekha Union in Nesarabad Upazila of the district. Last Monday (October 19) night, her 9-year-old daughter, Adrita Bepari, died when a passenger and motorcycle-laden trawler sank in the Sreeramkati-Bharatkathi ferry ghat area. Rina Bepari had been missing since the accident. The child's body was recovered on the very night of the accident. Raihanur Ashraf, Deputy Assistant Director of Pirojpur District Fire Service, stated that based on information provided by locals, the body was recovered on Wednesday morning.
Later, after the deceased's brother-in-law identified the body, it was handed over to the family following administrative procedures. Nazirpur Upazila Nirbahi Officer (UNO) Sazia Shahnaz Toma stated that an investigation into the trawler sinking incident is underway. Legal action will be taken if anyone's negligence or lapse is found. If evidence of negligence by the ghat leaseholders is proven, strict action including cancellation of the lease will be taken.
For context, it is primarily suspected that the trawler may have capsized due to overloading with extra passengers and motorcycles. The actual cause of the accident will be known after the investigation concludes.
