A cheerful nine-year-old child named Abraham, who walked into the hospital with his family on Wednesday morning expecting a routine nasal polyp surgery, died during the procedure at Abbas Specialized Hospital Limited in the Ulail area of Savar. Enraged relatives vandalized the hospital premises, alleging severe medical negligence. Following the incident, attending doctors and hospital officials reportedly fled the scene.
The victim was later rushed to Enam Medical College and Hospital in Savar, where emergency department doctors declared him dead on arrival. Abraham was from Rajnagar Noadda area in Singair Upazila of Manikganj. His father, Al Amin, works in Dubai, and the child lived with his mother.
The child's maternal uncle, Md. Rubel, stated that Abraham was admitted to Abbas Specialized Hospital on Wednesday morning for the procedure. He mentioned that the child was walking around and talking normally without any prior major health complications. However, after he was taken into the operation theater, doctors provided no updates to the family for a prolonged period.
Aminur Rahman, the victim's paternal uncle, alleged that consultant Dr. Shaheen administered anesthesia before Dr. Suman Hossain took the child into the operation theater for surgery. Suspicion grew when there was no update for a long time. As his condition deteriorated drastically, he was moved to Enam Medical College, where doctors confirmed his death. The family suspects an error in anesthesia administration or extreme medical negligence led to the casualty, demanding a proper investigation and legal accountability for those responsible.
As news of the child's death spread, angry relatives vandalized the reception and various rooms of Abbas Specialized Hospital. Police arrived shortly after to bring the situation under control.
Attempts to reach hospital authorities on-site were unsuccessful as officials had absconded. The hospital's owner, Dr. Abbas Uddin, did not answer multiple phone calls. However, an administrative officer named Mojibur Rahman claimed that the child suffered a severe complication when a cannula was inserted into his nose following anesthesia. He added that the OT in-charge rushed the child to Enam Medical College, where he was pronounced dead.
Dr. Md. Fazle Bari, Savar Upazila Health and Family Planning Officer, expressed deep regret over the incident, stating that an inquiry will be initiated and necessary action taken if a formal written complaint is lodged. Mosharraf Hossain, Inspector (Investigation) of Savar Model Police Station, confirmed that police deployed to the scene swiftly brought the situation under control, adding that legal action will follow once a formal complaint is filed.
