Police have arrested Fazlul Haq Amini, the mastermind and primary accused in the public mob beating and murder of youth Wahiduzzaman Shamim over alleged blasphemy charges in Debhata, Satkhira.
He was detained during a raid conducted around 12:00 AM on Saturday (October 17) in the Krishnanagar area under neighboring Kaliganj Upazila.
According to the event details, Fazlul Haq Amini broadcasted a provocative live stream on Facebook alleging defamation of religion. Subsequently, he and his followers misled and incited local residents, gathering a crowd at the spot, where Shamim was brutally beaten in front of everyone. Shamim was rescued and admitted to the Upazila Health Complex, but Fazlul Haq went live on social media once again, mobilizing another crowd to besiege the health facility later that evening. The mob broke down the hospital doors, dragged the critically injured Shamim out, and beat him to death.
The heinous and barbaric incident has sparked widespread outrage and condemnation across the region. Concerned citizens believe the murder was committed to serve personal or social interests by exploiting religious sentiments and misinterpreting Islam. Locals have labeled Fazlul Haq Amini a traitor and a stain on Islam for beating an innocent person to death in the name of a peaceful religion.
Acting on a tip-off late at night, an elite team from Satkhira RAB-6 conducted an operation in the Krishnanagar area and apprehended the fleeing suspect.
Police officials stated that primary interrogation of the main accused, Fazlul Haq Amini, is underway before producing him in court. Efforts to identify and bring other accomplices involved in this tragic murder to justice remain ongoing. Satkhira Police issued a stern warning that strict action will be taken against anyone taking the law into their own hands or creating chaos through religious provocation.
