According to the recently published Bangladesh Education Statistics 2025 report by the Bangladesh Bureau of Educational Information and Statistics (BANBEIS), student enrollment in general secondary schools has decreased by over 408,000, while madrasas offering Dakhil to Kamil levels saw an increase of over 43,000 students within a single year.

The number of madrasas rose from 9,269 to 9,296, with total enrollment reaching over 2.84 million, reflecting a growing preference for religious education, improved facilities, and economic factors following the pandemic.

Conversely, despite a slight increase in the number of secondary institutions, student numbers dropped from 7.84 million to roughly 7.43 million. Analysts, including DU Institute of Education and Research Professor Moninur Rashid, emphasize the need for in-depth research to uncover the underlying causes of these shifting trends and to address challenges such as teacher shortages and educational quality.
