Following the demise of veteran Indian actor Nana Patekar due to a cardiac arrest, Panaji Police in Goa have registered an "unnatural death" case under Section 194 of the Bharatiya Nagarik Suraksha Sanhita (BNSS).
Police authorities clarified that the filing of the medico-legal case is a standard legal procedure executed on the basis of a report provided by hospital authorities. Dr. Shekhar Salkar, Head of Oncology at Manipal Hospital in Goa, stated that Patekar was brought to the hospital between 4:20 AM and 4:30 AM on Thursday, where doctors pronounced him dead on arrival. Because the death occurred at his residence in the absence of an attending physician, law enforcement initiated the routine protocol to eliminate any legal ambiguity. Meanwhile, the actor's last rites were conducted late Thursday night with full state honors at his farmhouse in Donje village, Pune. His son, Malhar Patekar, explained that the funeral was held late at night due to significant transit delays in transporting the body from Goa to Pune, emphasizing that his father's legacy and ideals will live on through his work.
