Death Toll Rises to 19 in Kolkata Durga Puja Pandal Stampede Tragedy
Emergency services and crowd management units stationed at the Chorbagan Puja pandal in Kolkata.

The death toll from the catastrophic stampede at a major Durga Puja venue in Kolkata, West Bengal, has risen to 19, including 14 women and one child. The tragedy occurred around 8:00 PM on Saturday (October 17, 2026) at the Chorbagan Sarbojanin Puja Pandal, which had recently been awarded the state government's prestigious "Serar Sera" (Best of the Best) distinction.

According to Indian media reports, sudden heavy downpours forced thousands of pandal-hoppers to rush into the enclosed structures for shelter, far exceeding the venue's safety capacity. As the crowd packed tightly inside, panic erupted following an announcement by the organizing committee, leading to a crushing stampede. Many visitors collapsed from suffocation and were pronounced dead upon arrival at nearby medical facilities. Local residents and early responders cited a severe lack of crowd control infrastructure, police presence, and volunteer coordination.

The Chief Minister rushed to the hospital to meet the injured and expressed condolences to the families of the victims. The state government held the puja organizing committee responsible for the mismanagement and ordered immediate safety overhauls across all Kolkata pandals. Compensation of ₹25 lakh along with a Grade-D government job was announced for the families of each deceased victim, while ₹5 lakh was pledged for each of the 25 hospitalized individuals.
