Handyman Passenger Saves Hijacked Dubai-Tel Aviv Flight After Learning Controls from TV Documentaries

Chilling details have emerged following a near-disaster aboard a commercial flight traveling from Dubai to Tel Aviv, after a passenger stepped in to stabilize the aircraft during a violent attempt by the co-pilot to crash the plane.

Israeli authorities allege that two days ago, the flight's co-pilot attacked the captain with a hammer and knife in an attempt to bring down the aircraft. Hearing the commotion, passenger Yaniv Haioun—a handyman by profession—breached the cockpit alongside fellow passengers, restrained the attacker, and moved the injured, bleeding captain away from the entrance. Finding the aircraft in a sharp dive, Haioun sat in the pilot's seat and pulled back on the control yoke, successfully leveling the airplane before an off-duty pilot assisted in making an emergency landing in Tabuk, Saudi Arabia. Upon returning to Israel, Haioun met with Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, who asked how a handyman possessed flight handling skills. Haioun revealed that his knowledge came entirely from watching air crash investigation television documentaries, which enabled him to recognize emergency control procedures and avert a catastrophic crash.
