Ischemic Heart Disease and Stroke Remain Top Global Mortality Drivers in Latest WHO 2023 Estimates
The World Health Organization headquarters in Geneva, where global health estimates highlighting major mortality and disability factors were published.

Ischemic heart disease, stroke, and chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) accounted for the vast majority of global fatalities in 2023, according to comprehensive health and mortality data released by the World Health Organization (WHO).

The WHO report highlights that global life expectancy stood at 73.3 years in 2023, with ischemic heart disease alone claiming approximately 9.5 million lives—representing nearly 16% of total global deaths. The ten leading causes of worldwide mortality identified by the agency comprise ischemic heart disease, stroke, chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD), lower respiratory infections, dementia and Alzheimer's disease, diabetes, trachea, bronchus and lung cancers, hypertensive heart disease, kidney diseases, and diarrheal diseases. Beyond absolute mortality, WHO highlighted ten primary conditions that drastically impair quality of life or result in premature mortality and disability before old age: ischemic heart disease, stroke, lower respiratory infections, preterm birth complications, diabetes, low back and neck pain, COPD, accidental falls, road traffic injuries, and diarrheal diseases.
