The Nobel Assembly at the Karolinska Institutet awarded the 2026 Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine jointly to scientists Karl Deisseroth, Peter Hegemann, and Georg Nagel on Monday (October 5, 2026) for their pioneering discoveries concerning light-gated ion channels and the development of optogenetics.
According to the official announcement by the Nobel Committee, the trio’s landmark work centered around the discovery and application of channelrhodopsin—a light-sensitive algal protein that functions as a cellular switch for nerve cells. German researchers Peter Hegemann and Georg Nagel initially identified channelrhodopsin in single-celled algae, demonstrating how light could directly control ion movement across cell membranes. American scientist Karl Deisseroth subsequently harnessed and modified this protein to pioneer optogenetics, enabling researchers to selectively control specific neurons using targeted light beams. The revolutionary technique has fundamentally transformed modern neuroscience, allowing scientists worldwide to map complex neural networks governing memory, emotion, and human behavior, while paving the way for advanced treatments targeting neurological and psychiatric disorders.
