Pakistan Produces Retired Soldier Alive After Indian Military Claims to Have Killed Him in Kashmir
Pakistani military officials present retired soldier Mohammad Asif alive during a news briefing in Rawalpindi.

The Pakistani military has produced a former soldier alive at a press conference in Rawalpindi, contradicting claims by Indian security forces that he had been killed in a gunbattle in Indian-administered Jammu and Kashmir.

On Wednesday, Indian authorities announced the elimination of a rebel commander identified as Asif Faujal alias 'Musa'—a former commando of the Pakistan Army—accused of involvement in last year's Pahalgam attack. Indian media outlets subsequently published his military identification cards and personal records as proof of the operation. In response, Inter-Services Public Relations (ISPR) Director General Lt. Gen. Ahmed Sharif Chaudhry presented the retired soldier, identified as Mohammad Asif, before journalists on Thursday (October 1, 2026). Dismissing New Delhi's operational accounts as fabricated propaganda, Lt. Gen. Chaudhry noted that Asif had retired honorably from service in 2023 and resides at home. Speaking to reporters, Asif confirmed he was alive and well after friends alerted him to Indian media broadcasts showing his identity documents. The development has raised intense questions regarding the identity of the individual killed by Indian forces in Jammu and Kashmir.
