At least 12 crew members, including 11 Indian nationals, were injured after a missile struck the Panamanian-flagged commercial oil tanker MT Unpeace near the Strait of Hormuz off the coast of Oman on Tuesday.
In a formal statement released on Tuesday (October 6, 2026), India's Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) strongly condemned the attack on the commercial vessel, which was carrying 19 crew members in total, including 17 Indian nationals. According to the MEA statement, the missile struck the tanker while it was attempting to transit the strategic Strait of Hormuz. With the assistance of Omani authorities, all injured sailors were evacuated and are currently undergoing medical treatment at facilities in Khasab, Oman. The strike underscores escalating maritime insecurity in the Persian Gulf and Red Sea corridors, where commercial shipping and seafaring personnel have faced heightened threats following regional conflict escalations that began in late February. New Delhi reiterated its deep concern over repeated strikes on merchant vessels and civilian seafarers, urging an immediate cessation of hostile actions to restore freedom of navigation and maritime commerce in international waters.
