A strong earthquake struck the Tyrrhenian Sea northwest of the island of Sicily in southern Italy on Friday, October 23. According to the revised assessment by Italy’s National Institute of Geophysics and Volcanology (INGV), the earthquake measured magnitude 5.5. However, preliminary information from the Global Disaster Alert and Coordination System (GDACS) reported a magnitude of 5.7.

The epicentre was located beneath the sea, northwest of the Aeolian Islands. According to Italian media reports, tremors were felt across several areas of Sicily, from Palermo to Catania. Many residents rushed out of buildings in fear following the earthquake.

Several tremors were recorded in the same maritime area before the main earthquake. According to media reports, a magnitude 4.3 tremor was recorded at 11:51 a.m. local time, followed by another tremor measuring magnitude 3.6 at 11:56 a.m.

Following the earthquake, precautionary measures were taken in coastal areas. Due to concerns about a possible tsunami, people in some areas were advised to stay away from beaches, piers and low-lying coastal zones. Local authorities began monitoring the situation and taking steps to inspect buildings and critical infrastructure.

At the time the initial news reports were published, there were no reports of casualties or major property damage. However, further verified information was awaited regarding the full extent of the situation.

Bangladeshi expatriates and other residents living in Italy have been advised to follow instructions issued by local authorities and Civil Protection agencies. People near the coastline have been urged to remain alert to official warnings and avoid sharing unverified information on social media.
