U.S. Marine Detained in Okinawa Over Murder of Japanese Woman in Naha Hotel
Okinawa Prefectural Police officers investigate following the murder of Anna Yagi in Naha City.

Japanese police have detained a U.S. Marine stationed at the Futenma Air Base in Okinawa in connection with the murder of a Japanese woman, Anna Yagi, in Naha City.

The incident took place inside a hotel room in Naha on Saturday afternoon, where the victim's body was discovered at approximately 4:30 PM local time. Following an intensive review of hotel surveillance footage, law enforcement authorities identified a foreign national entering the premises with Yagi, before later departing alone carrying a wallet, backpack, and personal belongings. Okinawa regional police arrested the U.S. serviceman less than 24 hours later at around 1:00 PM on Sunday (October 4, 2026). The Japanese government has formally lodged a diplomatic protest with the U.S. Embassy in Tokyo regarding the crime. In response, American embassy officials expressed condolences and assured complete cooperation with Japanese law enforcement throughout the ongoing murder investigation.
