US-led troops exit Iraq: what's next for pro-Iran groups?

Following the departure of the US-led anti-jihadist coalition from Iraq, Prime Minister Ali al-Zaidi faces mounting pressure to rein in and disarm Tehran-backed armed groups. While the Prime Minister has pledged that these factions would hand over their weapons to the state, analysts and officials note the situation is highly complex.

Iran reportedly opposes the disarmament of its allied factions amid ongoing regional conflicts, while the armed groups demand assurances against US targeting and view their weapons as leverage for complete sovereignty.

Although some factions are engaged in talks with the government regarding regulation, powerful groups refuse to disarm, and the government currently lacks a concrete implementation plan, leading to delicate negotiations to prevent internal confrontation.
