Bangladesh Informs EU of Crackdown on Irregular Migration, Pushes for Skilled Mobility Corridors
State Minister for Foreign Affairs Shama Obayd Islam shaking hands with EU Migration Commissioner Magnus Brunner following bilateral talks on regular migration in Dhaka.

State Minister for Foreign Affairs Shama Obayd Islam held a bilateral meeting with the European Union (EU) Commissioner for Internal Affairs and Migration, Magnus Brunner, in Dhaka on Monday (October 12, 2026).

During the courtesy call, the two sides discussed comprehensive migration management, repatriation frameworks, counter-human trafficking measures, and legal labor avenues. State Minister Shama Obayd reaffirmed Bangladesh’s firm commitment to safe, orderly, and regular migration, urging the EU to open pragmatic, demand-driven 'mobility corridors' for Bangladeshi skilled professionals. She highlighted Bangladesh's newly launched 'National Action Plan 2026–2030', which aligns national policy with the objectives of the Global Compact for Migration.

In response, Commissioner Brunner presented the EU's 'Eastern Corridor Initiative', designed to curtail irregular migration by engaging origin and transit nations. State Minister Shama Obayd briefed the delegation on Bangladesh's strict measures against human trafficking cartels and fake documentation rings, while emphasizing that addressing root economic causes is vital for curbing illegal voyages. Both parties agreed to deepen cooperation across trade, investment, and bilateral labor partnerships.
