The Consumers Association of Bangladesh (CAB) has called on the government to dismantle corporate syndicates and reform market management to curb the soaring costs of essential commodities, medicines, LPG cylinders, and fuel.
The demands were voiced during a human chain and protest rally organized in front of the National Press Club in Dhaka on Monday (October 12, 2026). Speaking at the rally, CAB President AHM Shafiquzzaman urged the administration to adopt consumer-friendly policies for all 180 million citizens, eliminate artificial market scarcity, and end the practice of sudden "midnight price hikes." He particularly stressed taking immediate regulatory steps with the upcoming month of Ramadan in mind. Supporting the rally, former CPB General Secretary Ruhin Hossain Prince and Bangladesh Sadharan Nagarik Samaj Convener Mohiuddin Ahmed noted that price inflation hits lower-income households hardest, advocating for alternative state- backed market distribution channels.
Furthermore, CAB Organizational Secretary Abul Kalam Azad and General Secretary Advocate Humayun Kabir Bhuiyan highlighted how profit-mongering middlemen in transport logistics and widespread counterfeit products aggravate consumer misery, urging decisive legal action against dishonest syndicates.
