Liberation War Affairs Minister Denies Reports of Replacing Surrender Mural With Fountain at Sohrawardy Udyan
Liberation War Affairs Minister Ahmed Ajam Khan speaks to reporters at the Secretariat, clarifying plans for the Independence Monument complex at Suhrawardy Udyan.

Liberation War Affairs Minister Ahmed Ajam Khan stated on Wednesday (September 30, 2026) that recent media reports claiming the mural depicting the surrender of Pakistani forces at Suhrawardy Udyan would be removed to construct a fountain are completely incorrect.

Speaking to journalists at the Secretariat following a diplomatic meeting with Indian High Commissioner to Bangladesh Dinesh Trivedi, Minister Khan firmly rejected the rumors, emphasizing that the ministry has not held any discussions regarding replacing the historical surrender mural. He explained that while discussions surrounding site modifications took place under the previous interim administration, the present government remains focused on completing the Independence Monument (Swadhinata Stambha) in alignment with the core spirit of the Liberation War and the government's electoral manifesto.
