Prime Minister Tarique Rahman called upon all citizens and public officials to go beyond routine duties to protect Bangladesh's environment and build a sustainable, livable country for future generations.
Chairing a comprehensive progress review meeting at the Ministry of Environment, Forest and Climate Change (MOEFCC) conference room on Thursday (October 15, 2026), the Prime Minister issued key directives aimed at ecological restoration. A major cabinet decision was taken to identify and legally conserve the nation's "Mother Trees" within the next six months. Expressing deep concern over Dhaka's persistent ranking among the world's most polluted cities, PM Tarique Rahman urged every official and citizen to take personal responsibility to reverse urban pollution.
Underlining a grand vision to plant 25 crore tree saplings nationwide, the Prime Minister mandated that planting must be accompanied by mandatory regular maintenance and on-ground verification teams. Additional directives include expanding urban green spaces, promoting rooftop and school gardens, accelerating afforestation in the Chittagong Hill Tracts (CHT), and requiring MOEFCC to fulfill any plantation shortfalls left by other ministries. Environment Minister Abdul Awal Mintoo, State Minister Sheikh Faridul Islam, PM Special Assistant Saimum Parvez, and Acting Secretary Fahmida Khan were present at the high-level meeting.
