State Minister for Foreign Affairs Shama Obaed Islam has asserted that symbolic statements of support from the international community regarding the Rohingya crisis are no longer sufficient, calling for urgent, concrete global actions to facilitate repatriation and bolster security.
Addressing an event on the Rohingya situation at the Senate Bhaban of Dhaka University as the chief guest on Wednesday (October 7, 2026), the State Minister urged the international community to focus on paving the path for safe, dignified, and voluntary repatriation to Myanmar while addressing growing security challenges in Cox's Bazar. She emphasized that the displaced Rohingya population does not reject Myanmar as their homeland; rather, they reject the oppressive conditions that forced them to flee in the first place. To achieve sustainable repatriation, she noted that a conducive environment built on trust must be created inside Myanmar, encompassing official recognition, identity, land and property rights, physical security, and credible international guarantees. Emphasizing that repatriation hinges on restored confidence, State Minister Shama Obaed stated that the Rohingya seek their fundamental rights rather than charity, concluding that the ultimate solution lies within Myanmar and that Bangladesh cannot carry the burden of this crisis indefinitely.
