Bangladesh State Minister for Foreign Affairs Shama Obayed Islam asserted that the nation will maintain an independent geopolitical stance on its own terms, refusing to serve as an arena for foreign power dynamics.
Delivering her address at a session titled "A Rewritten World" during the 5th Bay of Bengal Conversation at the Pan Pacific Sonargaon Hotel in Dhaka on Saturday (October 3, 2026), Minister Obayed emphasized that the core pillar of Bangladesh's foreign policy remains the welfare of its citizenry. Organized by the Center for Governance Studies (CGS) under the theme "Navigating Power, Technology, and Trust in a Rebuilt World," the conference was inaugurated by Prime Minister Tarique Rahman.
In her speech, Minister Obayed outlined the dual geopolitical and economic pressures currently facing the nation, including volatile energy markets triggered by Middle Eastern conflicts and the safety of Bangladeshi expatriates. She highlighted that Prime Minister Tarique Rahman’s administration has initiated domestic offshore and onshore gas/LNG exploration—a sector previously neglected by prior governments—alongside renewable solar energy expansion to achieve domestic energy self-reliance. Addressing the decade-long Rohingya humanitarian crisis, she reaffirmed Bangladesh's compassionate stance while calling on international partners and regional allies to take decisive, actionable measures ensuring the dignified, safe, and sustainable repatriation of refugees to Myanmar.
