Brazilian legendary footballer Roberto Carlos has put an end to the constant rumors about his conversion to Islam which was circulating on Turkish media.

He stated that he has the ‘highest respect’ for Islam. However, the news of his conversion following his marriage to Moroccan football agent Souhaila El Tahiri is untrue.

The former Real Madrid and Brazil star clarified the issue in an exclusive interview with Saudi media outlet Okaz. Rumors of his religious conversion had recently spread widely across Turkish media and social media platforms.

"I have the utmost respect for Islam. It is wonderful to see my wife pray. But the rumors about my conversion to Islam are not true," Carlos said.

His statement directly contradicts recent news reports. Those reports claimed the 53-year-old former star recited the Shahada and embraced Islam after meeting Sheikh Jihad Hamada, a prominent figure in Brazil's Muslim community, for four weeks.

The discussion gained momentum following remarks by Ali Sahin, a lawmaker from Turkey's ruling Justice and Development Party (AK Party). Sahin claimed he learned of Carlos's conversion during a meeting with representatives of Brazil's Muslim community.

According to Sahin, Hamada told him that Carlos had been in contact with him for some time. Hamada said the former Brazilian star met him about four weeks ago and embraced Islam by reciting the Shahada. Sahin then congratulated Carlos and wished peace, good health, and blessings for him and his family.

Meanwhile, images circulated on social media claiming to show Carlos participating in an Islamic wedding ceremony. This further fueled speculation about his conversion.

However, Carlos presented a different account to Okaz. He explained that he and El Tahiri organized two distinct ceremonies to honor the religious beliefs of both families. Carlos noted that one ceremony respected his family's Catholic background, while another suited his wife and their Muslim friends.

Roberto Carlos is widely regarded as one of the greatest left-backs in football history. He enjoyed the most successful spell of his club career at Real Madrid. He was also a key member of Brazil’s 2002 World Cup-winning squad.
