A legal notice has been issued to Akhtarul Islam, Deputy Director and Public Relations Officer of the Anti-Corruption Commission (ACC), demanding the unconditional retraction of his public statement claiming the existence of "preliminary evidence" in corruption allegations against National Citizen Party (NCP) spokesperson and former Youth and Sports Adviser Asif Mahmud Shojib Bhuyain.
Supreme Court lawyer Muhammad Rafiqul Islam Joni served the legal notice on behalf of Asif Mahmud on Thursday (September 10). The NCP leader publicly disclosed the development through a post on his verified Facebook profile at 12:15 PM on Friday (September 11).
In the post, Asif Mahmud noted that during a press briefing on September 2, Akhtarul Islam claimed that the ACC had found "preliminary evidence" regarding alleged irregularities in transfers, appointments, and promotions under the Ministry of Youth and Sports. The statement was widely circulated across broadcast, print, and social media platforms. Asif Mahmud argued that making such a declaration prior to a formal investigation subjected him to a damaging "media trial" and created a public perception of guilt, severely tarnishing his personal and political reputation.
The notice highlighted that while the PRO later sent a message in an official WhatsApp group for journalists describing his use of the phrase "preliminary evidence" as a verbal slip and requesting reporters omit the term, no formal retraction or clarification was issued to the broader public. Consequently, the negative fallout and public trial generated by the initial briefing persisted.
The legal notice also outlined factual contradictions regarding the specific complaints. While the allegation claimed 38 Upazila Youth Development Officers had their current-charge duties canceled corruptly, official records show that 112 officers had their duties withdrawn by the ministry strictly to execute an Administrative Appellate Tribunal order.
Furthermore, claims linking Asif Mahmud to irregularities in the promotion of 150 Assistant Upazila Youth Development Officers were characterized as entirely baseless. Asif Mahmud resigned from his post as adviser on December 10, 2025. The promotions in question occurred on May 11, 2026—five months after his resignation and three months into the tenure of the BNP administration.
The legal notice demands that the ACC public relations officer unconditionally retract the statement in the media within 15 days and refrain from making unverified statements in the future. Failure to comply within the stipulated timeframe will result in legal proceedings under Section 500 of the Penal Code and other applicable laws.
