Bangladesh Hockey Team Loses 1-7 to China in Asian Games; Olympic Qualifier Hopes Dashed
Bangladesh men's hockey team in action during their Asian Games encounter against China in Gifu, Japan.

Bangladesh's hopes of qualifying for the 2028 Los Angeles Olympics ended on Thursday (October 1, 2026) after the national men's hockey team suffered a heavy 1-7 defeat against China in Gifu at the Asian Games in Japan.

A victory against China would have propelled Bangladesh into the fifth-sixth place classification match, securing direct qualification for both the next Asian Games and the 2028 Olympic hockey qualifiers, according to Asian Hockey Federation Tournament Director Golam Gaus. Following the loss, Bangladesh will now play Thailand in the seventh-place playoff. German Head Coach Peter Gerhard expressed sharp frustration over logistical shortcomings, revealing that the squad traveled to Japan without a dedicated team physiotherapist despite player injuries and exhaustion. Team Manager Ariful Haq Prince attributed the lack of an accompanying physio to strict accreditation quotas allocated by the Bangladesh Olympic Association. Meanwhile, national team player Amirul Islam highlighted structural deficiencies in domestic hockey, noting that senior players lack sufficient international match exposure compared to regional rivals.
