Spanish giants FC Barcelona have expressed underlying concerns ahead of their upcoming UEFA Champions League fixture against Galatasaray, as Italian referee Marco Guida has been appointed to officiate the high-stakes match in Istanbul.
According to a report by Spanish news outlet Mundo Deportivo, 45-year-old Guida will serve as the chief referee at the Ali Sami Yen Stadium on Tuesday night, supported by fellow Italian Marco Di Bello in the Video Assistant Referee (VAR) room.
Guida, an experienced FIFA badge-holder since 2014, holds an unfavorable record for Barcelona: the Catalan club has failed to win either of the two European matches officiated by him. Last season, Barça registered a 1-1 draw against Newcastle United in the Champions League Round of 16 under Guida, following a 3-2 group-stage defeat to Royal Antwerp in December 2022. Meanwhile, Galatasaray’s record under Guida stands at one victory and one defeat, including a 5-1 loss to Eintracht Frankfurt in the league phase last season.
