The Benin national football team is experiencing severe logistical challenges and substandard preparation conditions in Argentina ahead of Wednesday morning’s (BST) historic friendly match against the world champions, which serves as Lionel Messi’s final international appearance.
According to reports from pan-African outlet Mega Sports Media and investigative journalist Romain Molina, the African delegation endured a punishing 25-hour commercial flight to Buenos Aires during which a team video analyst suffered severe dizziness and briefly lost consciousness. Upon arrival, operational difficulties escalated at their team hotel, where an entire floor lacked hot water, sauna facilities were out of service, and fitness equipment was limited to just two treadmills and two bikes. Additionally, the team was provided with artificial turf training grounds deemed unsuitable for professional match preparation. Compounding the chaos, three players—Junior Olaitan, Charlemagne Azongnitode, and Sahid Ngobi—were reported missing from initial squad arrivals. The reports have raised broader questions regarding the Argentine Football Association’s (AFA) event management and revenue-sharing practices following similar controversies surrounding Argentina's recent match against Burkina Faso.
