Philadelphia Union midfielder Cavan Sullivan has etched his name into soccer history by becoming the youngest player ever to score for the United States Men’s National Team (USMNT) at 17 years and 5 days old.
In an international friendly against rivals Mexico on Sunday morning (October 4, 2026) at State Farm Stadium in Arizona, Sullivan doubled the U.S. lead in the 62nd minute. Capitalizing on a giveaway by Mexican goalkeeper Raúl Rangel, Sullivan controlled the ball and executed a long-range chip shot over Rangel's head into the net. The milestone strike broke the previous record set just four days earlier by teammate Mathis Albert (17 years, 131 days against Chile). Julian Hall opened the scoring for the U.S. in the 28th minute, while Malik Tillman sealed the 3-0 victory in the 84th minute. Head Coach Mauricio Pochettino lauded Sullivan's performance, describing him as a "fighter" with "tremendous quality".
