World No. 5 Daniil Medvedev was disqualified from the China Open semi-final in Beijing after accidentally striking a spectator in the eye with a tennis ball, advancing 24-time Grand Slam champion Novak Djokovic to the final.
The dramatic ejection occurred with Medvedev trailing 7-5, 5-3 against the Serbian top seed. Prior to the incident, Medvedev had drawn crowd reactions by mocking an injury timeout taken by Djokovic. Following a lost point, an agitated Medvedev struck a ball rebounding off the back wall, which flew directly into the front row of the stands, hitting a male spectator in the left eye. The fan was assisted out of the arena by stadium medical staff while clutching his face in pain. Match officials immediately applied code violation protocols, issuing a default against Medvedev. Speaking after the match, the 2021 US Open champion expressed deep regret, insisting the incident was a complete accident. Djokovic, who himself faced a similar default at the 2020 US Open, expressed sympathy for both the injured fan and Medvedev, stating he was certain the Russian had no malicious intent. Medvedev's career has seen previous disciplinary actions, including hefty fines for smashing net cameras at the 2025 Australian Open and disrupting play at the 2025 US Open.
