Emiliano 'Dibu' Martínez Undergoes Successful Jaw Surgery After On-Field Collision in Chelsea Victory

Argentine World Cup-winning goalkeeper Emiliano 'Dibu' Martínez has undergone successful surgery to repair a fractured jaw following a severe collision during Chelsea's 2-0 Premier League victory over Everton.

The injury occurred in the second half when Martínez attempted to punch away an Everton free-kick, colliding heavily with Everton center-back Jarrad Branthwaite. After receiving nearly ten minutes of treatment on the pitch, he was stretchered off and immediately transported to a hospital. While initial CT scans cleared his neck, spine, and skull of severe trauma, specialized tests revealed a jaw fracture requiring immediate surgical intervention.

According to TyC Sports, Martínez faces approximately six weeks (1.5 months) of rehabilitation. This timeline rules him out for several key Chelsea fixtures as well as Argentina's upcoming international friendlies against Uruguay and Costa Rica in mid-November 2026. Following the operation, Martínez posted a photo from his hospital bed on Instagram, expressing gratitude to fans, celebrating Chelsea's clean sheet, and promising a swift return. Argentine Football Association (AFA) President Claudio Tapia also shared a public message of support, wishing the keeper a speedy recovery and assuring him of the nation's backing.
