Former Argentina international and 2010 World Cup assistant coach Alejandro Mancuso has been implicated in a major coaching license scandal involving the Argentine Football Coaches Association (ATFA).
According to an investigative report published by Brazilian media outlet UOL, Mancuso allegedly operated as part of a "licensing mafia" within the prestigious institution, promising former professional footballers fast-tracked coaching credentials without requiring them to complete mandatory three-year coursework. Audio recordings surfaced where the accused claimed to have bypassed official online requirements through internal agreements, charging applicants up to 100,000 Brazilian Reals per certificate. The report links several high-profile South American football figures to the scheme, including Thiago Silva, Felipe Melo, Roberto Carlos, Luiz Gustavo, Diego Lugano, Paolo Guerrero, Alex de Souza, Petković, and Paulinho. A photograph of a certificate issued to Thiago Silva dated December 2023 bore the signature of former ATFA director Víctor Cocco, who had stepped down from the role in 2020. Mancuso denied wrongdoing, asserting that he merely facilitated direct inquiries between interested Brazilian players and the federation.
