Ilian Filipov, owner and president of Bulgarian First Professional Football League club FC Botev Plovdiv, was shot dead early Wednesday morning (September 30, 2026) outside a business facility owned by him in the city of Plovdiv.
According to the Bulgarian National Radio (BNR) and local media reports, the fatal shooting occurred around 1:00 AM local time. Filipov was a major industrial figure in Bulgaria, owning the logistics and transport conglomerate PIMK alongside holding majority ownership of FC Botev Plovdiv. Following the assassination, Bulgarian law enforcement sealed off major entry and exit points across Plovdiv—located approximately 90 miles southeast of the capital, Sofia—and intensified regional security operations. Plovdiv District Prosecutor Vanya Hristeva confirmed during a news briefing that law enforcement authorities have launched a full-scale homicide investigation, examining all potential motives behind the targeted killing.
