As the upcoming Ballon d'Or ceremony draws near, Real Madrid forward and France captain Kylian Mbappé has found himself at the center of growing debate—this time drawing sharp criticism from French football icon Jean-Pierre Papin.
Speaking to French outlet Foot Mercato, Papin—the 1991 Ballon d'Or recipient and former Marseille striker—expressed frustration over Mbappé's public fixation on winning the award. While acknowledging Mbappé's world-class talent and astounding record of 22 goals in 22 World Cup matches, Papin condemned the forward's self-centered rhetoric. "I really admire Kylian. He holds many records, but when it comes to the Ballon d'Or, it becomes all about 'me, me, me.' Yet, the Ballon d'Or is decided by others," Papin noted.
Papin's backlash follows an interview Mbappé gave to France Football, in which the superstar asserted that no player performed better than him over the past year, citing his individual goal-scoring feats on football's biggest stages. Papin characterized Mbappé's statements as excessive and warned that his arrogant public persona could negatively influence jury voters. Concluding his remarks, the French legend explicitly revealed his personal preference for this year's winner, backing England captain Harry Kane for the prestigious trophy.
