Australian batter Nic Maddinson has completed an extraordinary sporting comeback after being called up to the Australian Test squad for the upcoming tour of South Africa, over a year after recovering from testicular cancer.
The 34-year-old left-hander, along with wicketkeeper-batter Sam Harper, was added to the national squad after Josh Inglis suffered an injury ahead of the first Test scheduled for October 9, 2026. Maddinson, who played three Tests for Australia in 2016, underwent chemotherapy and intensive medical treatment after being diagnosed with cancer last year, keeping him sidelined from first-class cricket. Upon his return, Maddinson was named captain of New South Wales for the current domestic season and recently struck a century in the One-Day Cup. Australia National Selector George Bailey highlighted Maddinson's experience and tactical adaptability across the batting lineup, while confirming Harper will provide wicketkeeping depth.
