In one of the most astonishing comebacks in European football history, Real Madrid overturned a two-goal deficit in the final seven minutes to defeat AS Roma 4-3 in their UEFA Champions League Round 3 clash at the Stadio Olimpico.
Trailing 3-1 as late as the 83rd minute, manager José Mourinho faced an embarrassing defeat against his former club, whose supporters had greeted him prior to kickoff with a massive stadium tifo. Roma took firm control of the match through a 20th-minute long-range strike from Marten de Roon and a second-half brace from Donyell Malen (51', 57'), while Kylian Mbappé scored Real's sole goal in the first half.
The turning point came when Mourinho subbed off Vinícius Júnior and Denzel Dumfries to introduce Endrick and Turkish playmaker Arda Güler. In the 83rd minute, Güler delivered a cross that led to a Fede Valverde header; substitute Carlos Espi pounced on the loose rebound to make it 3-2. Just two minutes later in the 85th minute, Güler swung in a corner that Endrick powerfully headed home to make it 3-3. Finally, in the 90th minute, another pin-point corner from Güler created chaos in the Roma box, allowing defender Antonio Rüdiger to poke home the winning goal. The dramatic victory elevates 15-time Champions League winners Real Madrid to 8th position in the league table, while Roma drop to 25th.
