Indian women’s cricket has entered a new era following the appointment of star batter Smriti Mandhana as captain across all three formats, succeeding Harmanpreet Kaur who stepped down from the captaincy role.
Mandhana’s full-time captaincy tenure will commence with India’s upcoming bilateral white-ball series against Zimbabwe, featuring three T20Is in Raipur on October 16, 18, and 20, followed by three ODIs in Vadodara on October 23, 25, and 28. Opening batter Shafali Verma has been named vice-captain for the T20I squad, while all-rounder Deepti Sharma will serve as vice-captain in ODIs. The T20I squad features fresh faces Niki Prasad and Jintimani Kalita, alongside Minnu Mani and Anushka Sharma, while previous Asian Games gold medalists Shreyanka Patil, Renuka Singh, and Radha Yadav have been rested or excluded. In the ODI setup, Nandini Sharma earns her maiden ODI call-up. Despite relinquishing the captaincy, Harmanpreet Kaur remains an integral member of both the T20I and ODI playing squads.
