Expanding digital transactions through unified "Bangla QR" payment infrastructure could yield between BDT 2 lakh crore and BDT 2.5 lakh crore in additional tax revenue annually for Bangladesh, while significantly reducing cash handling risks and transparency gaps, stated Bangladesh Bank Director A.K.M. Kamruzzaman.
Speaking as the chief guest during the inauguration of a Bangla QR promotional campaign in front of Lutfunnessa Tower at Lili Mode in Dinajpur on Monday afternoon (October 26, 2026), Kamruzzaman highlighted that nationwide Bangla QR users have surpassed 500,000, generating average daily transactions of BDT 135 crore. He emphasized that transitioning from a cash-dependent economy to digital payment flows will solve retail change shortages for vendors, eliminate daily cash deposit hassles, and accelerate the vision of a "Cashless Bangladesh."
Special guest Mashrur Arefin, Chairman of the Association of Bankers Bangladesh (ABB) and Managing Director & CEO of City Bank PLC, noted that following successful promotional drives in Dhaka, Chattogram, and Rajshahi, the campaign has now extended to Dinajpur. In Dinajpur alone, 315 merchants affiliated with City Bank process around 550 daily transactions totaling BDT 30 lakh, with plans to scale regional daily volume to BDT 30 crore. The event featured a ceremonial ribbon-cutting and a colorful rally through Dinajpur city streets, attended by Bangladesh Bank Additional Director S.M. Abdul Bari, Assistant Director Md. Abdullah Zobayer, and senior banking executives.
