The Consumers Association of Bangladesh (CAB) has demanded that the Bangladesh Energy Regulatory Commission (BERC) guarantee the uninterrupted supply of Liquefied Petroleum Gas (LPG) at government-fixed prices without increasing rates or associated tariffs. CAB also called for immediate investigations and punitive action against syndicates creating artificial shortages, hoarding stock, and overcharging consumers.
The rights body's stance was detailed in a press statement issued by CAB Information Officer Anwar Parvez on Wednesday, October 28, 2026.
The demand comes ahead of BERC’s scheduled public hearing on October 29 regarding tariff adjustments for public and private LPG. In a formal letter sent to the BERC Chairman on October 26, CAB President A. H. M. Shafiquzzaman warned that any further price hike would impose severe financial strain on low- and middle-income families. Although BERC set the price of a 12kg LPG cylinder at BDT 1,837 on October 4, media reports indicate consumers are forced to pay an extra BDT 500 to 600 per cylinder in retail markets.
CAB asserted that international price fluctuations must not be used as a blanket justification to raise local storage, bottling, and transport charges. The organization submitted a 7-point charter of demands, urging BERC to audit importer claims using verified transaction documents, mandate price list displays and receipts at retail shops, ensure transparent distribution of subsidized government LPG, and revoke licenses of violating operators and dealers.
