IMF Projects Bangladesh GDP Growth to Slow to 3.2% as Inflation Spikes to 10.9% in FY 2026–27
The IMF-World Bank Joint Annual Meetings in Washington D.C. where the October 2026 World Economic Outlook and Bangladesh Development Update were presented on Tuesday.

Bangladesh’s economic growth is projected to slow to 3.2% in the current 2026–27 fiscal year, while average inflation is expected to climb to a sharp 10.9%, according to the International Monetary Fund's (IMF) latest World Economic Outlook published on Tuesday morning (October 13, 2026) during the ongoing IMF-World Bank Annual Meetings.

The flagship report indicates a worsening macroeconomic trajectory compared to FY 2025–26, which recorded a final GDP growth rate of 3.6% and an average inflation rate of 8.7%. The dual squeeze of decelerating economic activity and elevated consumer prices threatens to erosion of real purchasing power, stifle private sector investment, and hinder job creation. Concurrently, the World Bank released its October 2026 Bangladesh Development Update, titled "Make Subsidies and Social Protection Work Better for the Poor."

The World Bank highlighted that structural bottlenecks—including energy shortages crippling industrial production, rising non-performing loans (NPLs) in the banking sector, and misallocated social protection subsidies—continue to weigh heavily on recovery. Both multilateral lenders emphasized the urgent need for comprehensive banking sector reforms, revenue mobilization, governance enhancements, and strictly targeted social safety nets to protect vulnerable low-income households.
