20 Injured as Passenger Bus Overturns on Chattogram–Cox’s Bazar Highway, Traffic Disrupted
The overturned Saudia Paribahan passenger bus and rescue operations at Bagichahat on the Chattogram–Cox’s Bazar highway following an accident that injured at least 20 passengers.

At least 20 passengers were injured when a passenger bus overturned on the Chattogram–Cox’s Bazar highway in the Khan Dighi Shikari Para area, north of Bagichahat in Chandanaish upazila, early Wednesday morning. The identities of the injured passengers were not immediately known.

The accident occurred at approximately 4:30 am on October 28, 2026.

According to eyewitness college student Jalal Uddin Babu and local residents, the yellow-coloured long-distance bus operated by Saudia Paribahan, bearing registration number Chattogram Metro-B 11-1170, was travelling from Dhaka to Cox’s Bazar when the driver reportedly lost control near Bagichahat’s Khan Dighi Shikari Para area. The bus overturned in the middle of the highway.

The impact shattered the bus’s front windscreen and windowpanes, scattering broken glass across the road. Hearing the loud crash, nearby residents rushed to the scene.

Around 20 to 25 passengers sustained injuries, according to local accounts. Residents immediately began rescue operations and helped transport the injured to the upazila health complex, BGC Trust Medical College Hospital and Dohazari Health Complex. Several seriously injured passengers were reportedly referred to Chattogram Medical College Hospital for advanced treatment.

Following the accident, the overturned bus blocked the highway, leaving hundreds of vehicles stranded on both sides and causing a lengthy traffic jam.

After receiving the report, police from Dohazari Highway Police Station arrived at the scene. Officers used loudspeakers to control the crowd and regulate traffic. The bus was subsequently removed with the help of a recovery vehicle and a crane. Around 30 to 40 local youths also assisted police in efforts to right the overturned vehicle.

Local residents said the stretch of highway has insufficient lighting and a slight bend, making it potentially hazardous at night and during the early morning hours. They alleged that long-distance buses frequently travel at excessive speeds through the area, contributing to recurring accidents. They called for stricter speed control and improved road lighting.

Dohazari Highway Police Station Officer-in-Charge Md. Nurul Absar said police promptly responded after receiving information that a bus had overturned at Bagichahat in the early morning.

“Our team quickly reached the scene after receiving reports of the bus overturning. The injured were rescued and sent to hospitals. The accident-involved bus was recovered, and traffic was restored. Legal proceedings in connection with the incident are underway,” he said.

Traffic on the highway has since returned to normal.
