A mother hilsa conservation drive in the Padma River at Palerchar area in Jajira Upazila, Shariatpur, turned volatile on Monday morning (October 19, 2026) when fishermen attacked and hurled brickbats at local administration officials, fisheries department staff, and the local Member of Parliament. The attack targeted Shariatpur-1 MP Said Ahmed Aslam, Jajira Upazila Nirbahi Officer (UNO) Al Imran, and District Fisheries Officer Biswajit Kumar Deb.

According to eyewitnesses and authorities, an argument broke out during the patrol, prompting over a hundred fishermen wielding sticks to launch an attack and briefly blockade officials. Additional forces from the army and police rushed to the scene to restore order, successfully rescuing the blockaded official and dispersing the crowd. Security forces subsequently arrested 36 individuals and seized around 200,000 meters of illegal current nets along with 30 kg of mother hilsa. MP Said Ahmed Aslam stated he viewed the incident not as a personal attack but as resistance against a government enforcement operation, while officials affirmed that strict legal measures will continue.
